This project is the packaging design for the typeface LTR Beowulf, one of the 23 digital typefaces selected for the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) Architecture and Design Collection. A panel of expert designers, critics, and historians made the decisions for this collection based on aesthetics, historical relevance, social significance, and more.
This Typography assignment (Fall 2023 - Spencer Norman) instructed us to imagine that MoMA was featuring these typefaces for purchase in the museum’s gift shop. My job was to design the immediate packaging, a full character set, a brochure containing the history of the LTR Beowulf and the designers, and a foldout poster within the package. We were also limited to use three spot colors within the project. I used a lot of stacking and layering in my work to give it a glitching effect, as LTR Beowulf was the first randomized typeface and was a huge technological advancement in the design world.
The typefaces we were assigned in class were randomly selected and drawn from a hat. I remember being so disappointed to see mine, as I watched people around me open up these pretty and delicate fonts. We were told we could pick again if we really wanted to, but I decided I was up for the challenge. The chaotic and striking design I went for was entirely out of my comfort zone and unlike anything I’ve designed before. I really enjoyed designing this project and learned a lot in my research about generative type design.
