Miles and miles of open roads, back country and beautiful scenery can be seen as you travel the rural areas of our prairie provinces. There was a time, not very many years in the past, when family farms and small rural towns dotted the landscape across the Canadian prairies. Thriving family farms and small business were passed from one generation to the next; they were the backbone of Canada's prairie economy. As technology changed, railroad lines closed and younger generations sought their futures elsewhere, communities died and farms sold with the passing of their elders.

But if you stop for a moment as you drive down those back roads, and really look, and listen really hard,  you can still hear the laughter of family and friends that once gathered and you can still see the people as they moved throughout the days and years of their lives.

This is the first part of a series of my travels down those roadways and the stories that I have heard in the winds.......

When you look....what do you see,
broken windows,
peeling paint,
a tumbled down shack,
a pile of old wood to be burned to the ground
I see so much more than that,

I see a shelter from the cold
a port in a storm
a house and a home full of laughter and love
When you look....what do you see
Shingles gone
Broken boards
A roof that has fallen away
An old door barely hanging by its hinges and ready to fall
a shelter for food,
a dwelling for animals

a place that once sustained all and thrived year after year
I see so much more than that
I see a gathering place thru generations
a place full of family and friends
Roots rich with the stories of life...linked
a safe haven,

a foundation for the circle of life....
birth, death and birth again
When you look.....what do you see
