Fish and Flowers: Markets in Bangkok and Tokyo

One of the reasons why I became a vegetarian eight years ago is because I wasn't comfortable eating animals. However, I love exploring other cities and eating new food. While I didn't stop being vegetarian while traveling, I still wanted to experience aspects of culture like going to the market. In Bangkok and in Tokyo, the fish markets are famous. I went with my family and I had a hard time with all the smells and sights that come with a fresh fish market. So I hid behind my camera lens, as a way turning something real and disturbing into something almost abstract and unreal. It began with fish, and then we went to a flower market and I treated the products the same way. Collectively, these are just photos of the types of foods and things one finds in a market in Bangkok or in Tokyo. To me, they were a way of compartmentalizing my surroundings.
