Kyle Swan  // Honours Student 2024

Throughout this year, my work has homed in on the specific genres of documentary and pet portrait photography. Focusing on research methods, I have conducted several that are new to me. Part of my primary research included voluntary work at CFINE. This gave me a great insight into a day in the life of their staff and volunteers. Dealing with real and immediate situations only added to my motivation and passion toward the work they do. Another new research method consisted of a photovoice project. I purchased a cheap digital camera and asked CFINE to photograph themselves throughout the course of two weeks. The results were honest and provided a valuable insight to the community that they have generated.

My dissertation topic was ‘the line of consent: a right to photograph’. This theme ties in with all the projects I conducted. From beneficiaries at CFINE to the owners of the dogs of Brewdog, each model/ subject has unique opinions of photography and how images are used. Each image has a different purpose. Learning how to communicate reasons for taking photographs is a skill I have gained experience and knowledge in, albeit one that you can always keep learning.
