Dodol Zine Volume 1: Dialogue
Dodol Zine is a genre-based comics anthology featuring narrative short stories, brought to you by the Inkling team. Our goal is to unite various artists and create a wide array of visual narratives that explore diverse themes and voices. Named after the beloved Malaysian dessert, Dodol Zine is a rich and heartwarming treat, just like the confection it's named after. The zine's title design is inspired by the Risograph printing method, which utilizes halftone dots to bring vibrancy and texture to its pages. In Dodol Zine, these dots symbolize the diverse stories that intertwine to create a larger narrative on the chosen theme, offering readers a journey of artistic exploration.
In the realm of art, the most profound dialogues often transpire in silence. Our quest for a theme was rooted in the need for something grounded yet imaginative, something wide enough to allow different thoughts and voices to shine.
How did we arrive at the theme of "Dialogue"?
The inception of this theme was a product of passionate conversations within the Inkling team, as we contemplated which concept would serve as the launching point for our first volume. As enthusiasts of comics and gaming, we were naturally drawn towards the playful realms of magical creatures and RPG adventures. However, these tales were overwhelmingly dominated by mainstream media, making it seem redundant to produce yet another zine on these subjects.
In the course of our discussions, the theme of "Conversation" emerged as the ideal choice. Later, we chose to refine it to "Dialogue," a title that visually encapsulates the essence of conversation with the start and end of an apostrophe, symbolizing the connection between two sides.
