Beehive Japanese Notan

BEEHIVE JAPANESE NOTAN
This is my final piece for the Japanese Notan topic. The assignment was to create a piece of art which denotes a state of balance or harmony between light and dark values.
The process started by brainstorming 20 concepts for the notans and then sketching 2 different designs for my 4 favourite ideas.
These sketches were made in order to test out several ideas for the final result. These were the three primary sketches in mind, and they served as my basis for the final design. Since I felt the other ideas had too much going on and that details would be lost, I made the decision to go with the right idea for the final project.
Black paper was adhered to white paper to form the finished product. To create the knockout effect I used tools such as an x-acto knife, glue and rulers. I did slightly change my final project from the sketch as I thought the placement of the honeycomb looked more free and allowed the project to come together as one rather than be broken into sections.
