Natural Wonders Poster

For this project, we were tasked with creating a poster encouraging travel to one of the three Natural Wonders. Students would be given one of the following three subjects: The Grand Canyon, The Great Barrier Reef, and The Northern Lights. Each subject was accompanied with information regarding visiting times, three paragraphs of body copy, and six fun facts. The students were challenged to arrange the information required with visual hierarchy on the poster, that would allow the information to be easily accessible to the reader.
During my sketches, I failed to consider the effect of improperly proportioning my sketch. Because of this, I struggled with recreating my sketches in a way that used the space well. However, the sketching process was helpful in allowing me to decide how I would break up the. My original poster design felt rather cramped, which inspired me to explore a horizontal orientation. My thinking was that if the couch doesn't fit through the door, you turn it. While my horizontal design was ultimately not the most successful, it allowed me to see ways of separating the information that I hadn't previously considered.
Through this project, I gained a better understanding of using the space available on the page. Before this, I often struggled to maintain a negative space in heavily informative designs. My biggest challenge was arranging my poster so that it still felt as though there was space, without disconnecting the overall design. I feel that grouping the information and understanding how much space that actually accounts for was the biggest aid in overcoming this.
