Disposable Lens Mount for Nikon N1 Mounts

Disposable Lens Mount for Nikon N1 Mounts
A simple disposable lens mount for a Nikon camera using NIKKOR 1 lens mount.

Background

I had come across a Nikon J1 with a broken lens. Rather than replacing the lens (expensive) for an obsolete and discontinued camera, I figured I'd find a disposable camera lens adapter. Unfortunately, no model existed for printing, and no pre-made part existed for the short-lived and niche NIKKOR 1 (N1) camera lens mount.

Design Process

This made the project a perfect candidate to use my CAD background with. The Nikon J1 is a mirrorless camera, which provides flexibility for the user on how far or close they would like to position their disposable lens from the sensor.

I measured the mounting interface from my broken lens, and using Autodesk Fusion 360, initially designed a cap to test fitment before proceeding with the rest of the project. Next, I procured a set of disposable lens. I experimented with positioning the lens at various distances away from the sensor, and was careful and prudent to not touch the sensor itself.

After that, I created the geometry needed to friction fit the lens into a printed part. After I was satisfied with the fitment, I styled the adapter and experimented with various print orientations. Finally, after testing the lens out and revisiting the images in Lightroom, I prepared a brief description, assembly instruction, and photography tips using it before publishing.

It is available for free download on my Printables page.
