Illustration I did a few months ago exploring two things that were fairly new to me: surrealism and ink wash. I had never really completed a piece using liquid inks or watercolors prior to this (the most I did was experiment by painting shapes and practicing gradients), and I had never painted a surreal scene. So I thought it was time to give it a try.

Using reference photos that I purchased, I started sketching possible poses. I was feeling really down at the time, and appropriately drew the limp and dispirited figure you see in the bottom left. Chained to him is a mass of limbs, strong and overpowering. There is very little context as to where the scene is taking place. Tree trunks, another figure, and a large mountain range in the distance are the only pieces of information given.

Everyone feels depressed at some point, but some more than others. It's as if there is this strong, overpowering entity chained to you that won't leave you alone.
