Illustrations for Children's book by Folks n' Fables
This book is written by Lauren Thornton, who reached out to the company Folks n' Fables for illustrations and layout. The final illustrations were done in rectangular spreads of 12 pages.
This book was about a girl who doesn't like her thick curly hair and her mother tries to sing her a song to make her feel better about it.
Process:
1. Style sample for the second page of the book was done for trail check with the author. In the two images below, the client moved forward with the first one.
2. Character designs were done for both the girl and the mother. Reference pictures of the author and the author's kids were used for the character design. The girl's hair took an exaggerated form and the body proportions were taken sample from another work by Folks n' Fables.
.
3. Rough sketches of all the pages were done in my interpretation of the lines of the story. There were heavy inputs of the author for the visual concepts and guidance from the Folks n' Fables team for the execution.
.
4. Detailed sketches of the pages were done. A picture motif was introduced as a result of interpreting the writing given to me to imagine the visuals. In the very first frame the girl's childhood picture with straight hair drawn over it using her crayons/ color pencils is shown, which later the mother wipes it away to her kid know that she is beautiful anyways.
.
5. Colors were added to the characters and the background, but it was critiqued for the heavy distraction of the background color from the subjects.
.
6. Background colours were changed an made subtle.
.
7. The following is the final approved sketches. First one being the front cover picture. Few more matters were resolved in terms of color and detail.

That's all folks!
