SUMMARY:
The objective of this project was to create a typographic glossary to learn how to create a spread and ebook. We started the project by creating the pages of the ebook using InDesign. This workshop helped us further our knowledge of InDesign and understand page layout. We were also introduced to new terms such as parent pages and character styles. We developed our own character styles for our glossary. Then we created a cover design for our glossary. When designing the glossary, we could only use type. This helped our understanding of typographic form, spacing, and layout.
GOALS:
My goals for this project were to better understand typographic layout and spacing. These terms are important in design. The layout and spacing are important in design; they help the viewer be able to read and understand your composition. If the leading, tracking, or kerning are off, it can hinder the work as a whole. If your hierarchy is not clear, the composition is not understandable to the viewer. Overall, I think learning these elements of design will help further advance my work as a designer.

FONT EXPERIMENTS:
During my research for the first exercises of this project. We study how different fonts work together. For example, we study how Thick and Thin fonts work together. So, I then found two different fonts one Thick and One Thin, and showed how they worked together. Another example would be soft and hard fonts.
For the second exercise, we were working on hierarchy. We applied what we did before in our first exercise and picked two fonts that worked together. Then we adjusted the size to show the hierarchy of the glossary design system. After, we picked a color for our hierarchy and kept the body text black because it’s easier to read.
In the third exercise, we applied everything from the other exercises to this exercise and designed a system for our glossary. Instead of choosing two fonts, we picked a font family. I then adjusted the spacing of the type to help the legibility and to help show the hierarchy of the type. Then we chose a color that worked best for our design system and applied it to only the hierarchies.
PRELIMINARY GLOSSARY BUILD:
The type family I chose for the glossary was Bodoni 72 Old-style. The font is a serif which means it has small lines attached to the letters. I used the bold font from this type family for the hierarchy to show a difference between the body text and the hierarchy. Also used the bold font from this font family for my term made the size of my term smaller and the spacing wider and made the text in all caps. I then used the book font style from this font family for my body text to differentiate the body text from the other elements of the glossary. When I placed the images into the box I used the File: Place feature in InDesign and then placed the image into an image text box.
FINAL FULL GLOSSARY FILE BUILD:
When creating I knew I wanted to go for a clean modern aesthetic. I used Adobe Illustrator to create my work. I first created sketches of the designs I wanted and then created various cover designs. Then I chose a design that I liked best and created different versions of the design. Then picked the final design. The final design depicts the word “type” The letters were arranged the way they were to show visual tenison. The word glossary was in bold font and all lowercase to show a difference in the hierarchy.
PRINTED GLOSSARY:
When printing the glossary, we printed out our spread. Then we took the spread and made a clean crease in the middle using the end of a pin. Then we folded the spread and used the roller to create a clean fold. Then we bound the book together by stapling the spin of the book.
KNOWLEDGE GAINED:
This project achieved all of the goals I wanted to learn from this project. I was able to grow my understanding of the importance of these design elements: spacing, layout, and hierarchy. I also learned more about InDesign. I was able to learn how to create parent sheets and how to place an image into an image box. I learned what font styles work together and the importance of picking a font that doesn't hinder the viewer's ability to understand the composition.
