ART235 Project 2 - Conceptual Book Covers

Project 2 of the Fall semester: Conceptual Book Covers. We were given a list of books to select to create book covers for. My chosen book is The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Luis Stevenson. A classic tale of the duality between the good and bad side of people. We had to create three different concepts of book covers for our chosen book: Typography only, handmade, and designer's choice. These are the final images.
First, the typography cover. Designed to show the darker side of Mr. Hyde that...hides...in Dr. Jekyll's shadow, ready to reveal himself at any moment. Pretty straightforward and simple.
The handmade cover. Made with a single sheet of paper folded in half. The top half showing a more clean, uniform appearance representing Dr. Jekyll while the bottom half was torn to shreds, showing the more chaotic and crazy side of Mr. Hyde (even though they are from the same person/paper).
Finally, the designer's choice. Essentially whatever we wanted to do. This originally was one of the typography covers, however I liked it too much to get rid of it. Instead, I kept it and reused it as my final cover. The black and green remind me of alchemy, which Dr. Jekyll practices. I used purple as Hyde since purple is the opposite color of green. Since Hyde is the exact opposite of Jekyll, I figured it would be a good color to use.
