Savanna Lamp
Wintersession 2023
Metals for Furniture
Factory excess hot-rolled steel metal sheets, metal pipe, LED bulb and switch
Used TIG welding & Plasma cutting

Process:
This project was done over a period of a few weeks through thoughtful brainstorming, smaller prototypes, and material sourcing. The idea was to construct a lamp with movable lampshades, which can be arranged to anyone's liking. This can cause the light to shed radially or more-so in one direction when covered by the shades. Each shade has tree designs or abstract patterns made by plasma cutting and roll bending (as photographed below). The designs emulate the warmth of a sunset in a savanna biome. The base was made from a roll bent strip of steel welded to a band-sawed circle. A hole in the middle of the base was cut to weld metal piping for the bulb to be inserted into. Additionally, the center holds a smaller shade to help direct the light through the shades.
