"Gangs of Lagos" Title Treatment / Logo

The Ask:
Create a logo for the new Prime movie, Gangs Of Lagos. An Amazon Original, one of the first from Nigeria, the show captured the grittiness and essence of the titular city. We had to ensure the logo did the same. It would also be used as part of title sequence. Over 10 other markets from around the world were tasked with creating it, in addition to South Africa.

The Solution:
What makes a memorable logo? It’s one that you can feel. Or one that makes you feel something. We approached Gangs of Lagos with the intention to make it feel visceral. Unpolished. Urban. It had to feel like it not only belonged on the streets of Lagos, but that it was born there. Using a bold, timeless San Serif font for the type, we created a distressed texture that cuts into the typography to give it a gritty feel. The bright yellow colour is inspired by what is dominant on the streets of Lagos - the Kabu Kabu (the local name for the yellow dodgy taxis). The yellow also evokes a sense of how the characters in the movie strive to find light among the darkness of their situation. This treatment of the title from South Africa is what led to it being selected, from among all the other markets who participated.
