I wanted to bring awareness to the effects of climate change on the arctic, particularly to those around me in NYC. I printed ten copies in large formate and plastered them around New York City.
I was inspired by the designs of two environmental advocacy posters that I found while doing research.
This poster is for a nonprofit organization called the Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds. Their mission is to reverse the decline of seabird populations, especially endangered species like the African penguin. I like the design of this poster for two main reasons. The first thing I noticed is the simplicity of it. The black and white color scheme emphasizes contrast (and importance), facilitating the illusion of many healthy penguins to one, lonely and unhealthy penguin near the bottom. The second thing I noticed about this poster is its use of movement from top to bottom, pointing the reader to ultimately read the text after following the dynamic hierarchy of information.
The organization that this poster is advocating for is ineligible in the bottom right corner, but I can safely assume that it is resisting the practice of seal hunting. Like the last SANCCOB example, the simple elements of color scheme and multifaceted design are what I notice first about this poster. Illusions can create more depth to a picture, encouraging the viewers to think more deeply about what the two subjects could mean in relation to one another. The intentional color placement is also admirable, with the top half being red and conveying a sinister association with the human hand, and the red text highlighting what the organization is advocating for.
