The Saponaria: Adaptive Reuse of Lavadouros

The Saponaria: Adaptive Reuse of  Lavadouros
Summer 2023, Professor: Silvia Benedito

In Cepos, Portugal the washroom is one of the few communal spaces that still exist. Laundry washing moved from rivers to public washrooms starting in the 1930s. Beyond providing more hygienic washing, they were important places for women to socialize and sing. The white crosses on the map are locations of villages near Cepos that still have public washrooms. The Saponaria project can be a model for other villages to replicate and form a regional network of grey water filtration gardens.
