Illustration As Inquiry: A visual response toNew Zealand Fashion Week is an illustrated satire that takes a sharp look at both the surface and what beats beneath New Zealand Fashion Week. Its observations of labels; are a celebration of both the fashionista and the event's 10th anniversary.
By drawing on personal experiences and utilising illustration as my vehicle, I mix satire and celebration as a way of challenging traditional representations of beauty and fashion. In this way, the publication can be seen as a form of social commentary that, while toying with certain framings of photojournalism, also ‘updates’ the caustic illustrative approaches of 17th century satirical illustrators like James Gillray and Philip Dawe.
The publication was part of a submission for an MA thesis in illustration in 2010.
