Week 5: Images as Commentary – 'All connected, all equal'
Attached above are the 10 initial thumbnail sketches for different poster ideas regarding speciesism. Speciesism refers to the assumption of human superiority to animals, and subsequent poor treatment of animals as a result. This overarching theme was extrapolated through the previous week's focus of 'more-than-human lives in the city', continuing the commentary that humans and animals are equal.
Of the 10 thumbnail sketches, I decided to focus on thumbnail no. 4 for my resolved lino print and poster. Attached above is an updated iteration of the thumbnail created using Unipin Fineline marker in 0.8mm. I decided on thumbnail no.4 as I quite like the cohesion of the design, and felt it was a more easily digestible way of communicating the message of human and animal equality in comparison to the other designs.

Pictured above, is the lino print. As evident in the image, the ink is very inconsistently printed across the entire design. This is because I unfortunately did not have access to correct relief-print equipment at home and resorted to using gouache as my ink medium, and a gladwrapped chopping board as my printing station. This combination resulted in a very poor attempt at lino print. Despite this, I do quite like the texture the inconsistency has created, as it gives the design a more activist, passionate feel.

Final poster. Simple, yet hopefully effective. One thing the poster might have benefited from would be additional grain effect on the text to make it look less flat and more cohesive.
