aphonia
An extended project-research of the voice through embodiment. Multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary work with the individuality of the voice and its flexibility depending on conditions, place and interaction with other individualities.
«aphonia» - from the Greek aphonia, from a, a negative particle, and phone, sound, voice; total loss of voice, voicelessness (Dictionary of Dahl).
The work was made as part of «Forbidden Body Language» - curatorial project by Elza Abdulkhakova, at the main program of the VII Moscow International Biennale of Young Art. The "aphonia" laboratory was worked with the permanent group of participants. The result of the laboratory was a video work.
It is important to perceive the voice not as a usual tool of information transmission through verbal communication, but as a part of the "body language". The characters of the video, each with their own attitude to voice and their individual request to work with it, find themselves in a "performative field" where they encounter their own experiences, work with them, meeting and interacting with other characters and their anxieties. Without using specific words and images, the individuals encounter each other, form a family-community, trying to understand each other on a deeper sensual level, which affects themselves and their relationship to themselves and their voice.
