Read on the Rails - Drive-Thru Library

Nestled near the historic brickyard park Mildenberg in Germany, the tiny library emerges as a whimsical addition to the idyllic landscape. Once a bustling pathway for brick transportation, the railway tracks now meander alongside multiple very attractive fishing lakes. Today, the brickyard park serves as a museum, inviting adventure-seekers to hop on rail bikes or take a delightful ride aboard the vintage train.

Drawing inspiration from a dollhouse concept, the library’s architecture showcases a distinctive shape achieved by cutting a rectangle diagonally. This daring architectural move allows the railway tracks to glide right through the heart of the building.
Large glass facades open up the cut sections, providing a glimpse into each room, akin to peering into the rooms of a dollhouse.

The interior layout is thoughtfully arranged, reminiscent of a dollhouse, with a climbing tower resembling a chimney and a slide off the roof resembling water collecting downpipes. With a generous use of eco-friendly wood that harmonizes effortlessly with the verdant forest surroundings, the library’s construction is embracing sustainability. The tilted roofs will be equipped with solar panels.

As visitors embark on this literary journey, they‘re transported through time, nature, and boundless imagination—a celebration of community, woven into the very fabric of the drive-thru library. The tiny library invites both locals and visitors to experience the joy of reading amidst the beauty of the lakes and forests, creating a harmonious blend of culture, nature, and creativity.
