Polar bears means family. As a bear is renovation, shamans belive that some ancient spirits has their spiritual body in a bear form.
To me, everyone had one animal spirit... and that spirit is associate to his personality. 
Well, there are people more like dogs, or birds, if you know what i mean.
I belive in a bear inside everyone. Waiting to wake up and walk away in their own spring. :)
