As we moved through the various important and iconic movements of the evolution of graphic design as a profession, we completed exercises inspired by the most influential artists/designers of each time period. My favorite examples from the class are shown below.
Inspired by the Chi Rho illuminated manuscripts, this exercise was to render our own initials (in Greek) in the ornate style with carpet like patterns and textures. My initials, S K or Sigma Kappa, were drawn and inked by hand with water color applied to give an aged effect.
Inspired by Bernhard's simple advertisement featuring large image of the product and bold name with minimal text.

Inspired by Russian constructavist Lissitzky, this magazine cover for "History of Graphic Design" uses simple lines and colors, as well as diagonal axes and asymmetrical balance.

Fukuda Poster
Inspired by the clever posters of Japanese designer Shigeo Fukuda who used simple black shapes as well as optical illusions and clever negative space to convey important social messages.
My message with this poster is more of a personal one, obviously.
