Gifts: Cultural Iconography
__
This project consists of a series of gift products designed based on a group of locally found icons. A gift catalogue accompanies the products explaining them and how they are derived from local iconography. The idea behind this project stems from the issue of cultural appropriation and re-works visuals with cultural value. The icons retain aspects of their original meanings but new ways of seeing the icons have added to their value and they are appropriated onto objects such that new meanings are generated. We see these icons from new perspectives and this will probe the viewer to think deeper about meaning making in local iconography and the issue of cultural appropriation and uninformed misuse.
The issue of focus for this project is cultural appropriation. The misuse of a visual image because of a lack of knowledge about that particular image which may have cultural significance. This issue is related to graphic design because image-making and meanings that aid the image making is important in this field of design. Local iconography are explored in this project and research about their meanings is done to gain insight about their cultural significances.
