Esteban. An Anthology. DVB201 - Joseph Clarke - Zine
Zine Concept
From the typographic brief that I was given, I chose to investigate the font, Esteban. I chose this font as I enjoy using Serif Fonts and I also wanted to express some of my creative ability in my writing. This font is the most common font seen in those inspirational poems that everyone’s mum reposts on Facebook occasionally. I love the idea of making this the concept around my feature article. However, this is quite difficult as I needed to make sure that the poems were able to get my point across whilst being visually appealing.

I aim to use variety of techniques and type trends in the zine to assist with the content, such as text over shape and text on path. I want to experiment with the idea of making the content in within my zine informative whilst making it fun, which will be the most challenging aspect of this zine.
Research - Inspiration
Kate Von EUW – Back to the Futura
This was a particularly interesting as it followed the concept of the font FUTURA. I was particularly interested in the use of text and images combined. I loved how she went in depth about the background and history of the Designer Profile. I was really inspired by many of the font trends that she had used within her zine, even applying some of them to my own. Her simple colour scheme really brought it together and was a main source of inspiration to my zine.
Selena Oung – A Foreign (type)face
This zine follows the font Heisei Kaku Gothic. I loved the look of this zine as soon as I saw it. I loved the use of colour and how it demonstrated the connection to Japanese heritage and how there were not too many elements fit onto a page. She has been able to use the alignment of different page elements to draw attention to the important bits of information. I took much inspiration from the simplicity and effectiveness of this zine.
Rocío Del Monaco - Árbol de Diana | Zine
This was a zine that I stumbled across whilst browsing behance. I immediately saw the handwritten text and I knew that was the goal for this project. Even though I could not read this zine as it was in another language. The way that the designer has highlighted different headings and pull quotes through the use of alignment and traditional design rules was quite inspiring. This is another example that alignment can have in a zine.

A Short Reflection
After reflecting upon this assessment there were many different challenges, successes, and learnings throughout the process.
When looking back at my zine many issues surfaced whilst investigating the font designer, there was very limited information about Angelica Diaz herself with little to no information on her social medias and other websites. In the future I want to investigate a font that has more research information about the type of designer so I can get a better idea of what it means to design font.
Honestly, If I could redo this assessment, I would not have turned all my paragraphs into poems. The process of picking apart each of the bits of information I wanted to include whilst making sure that it pertained to the rules of the poem was extremely difficult and time consuming.
I think the biggest success of this assessment is making each of my lines into poems. I love the way that each of them reads, and the energy it gives. I love the simplicity of the design, drawing attention to the text and enhancing the reader experience.
Overall, I leant lots from this project and have grown as a designer.

Esteban is a typeface intended to be used in texts, especially literature and poetry. I wanted to transform this zine to express its content through the art of poetry through a variety of Limericks, Lyrics, Haiku’s, Cinquain’s and Elegy’s.

A critical Lyric
In Esteban, behold a font of grace,
A serif's elegance, its every trace.
With medium contrast, it commands the eye,
Tall x-height, reaching for the sky.
Medium compression, a subtle embrace,
Bringing letters together, finding their space.
Robust serifs, sturdy and refined,
A touch of tradition, a design aligned.
Each curve and stroke, a deliberate dance,
Crafted by Angelica, a typographic romance.
Released in 2014, a gift to behold,
Esteban's beauty, a story untold.
With every character, a tale to unveil,
Versatile and timeless, it will never pale.
Esteban, a trademark, Rivera's creation,
A font that captures hearts with dedication.
So let the words flow, in Esteban's embrace,
Expressing thoughts with poise and grace.
For this font, crafted with utmost care,
Breathes life into language, beyond compare.

A Critical Acrostic:
Elegant strokes, Esteban’s glory etched.
Style that mesmerizes poets and writers.
Texts come alive, weight shifting as the stoke stems.
Embracing Jorge’s modulated strokes, a captivating dance.
Bold and dynamic, each letter takes flight.
A performance on the page, even in medium to low quality prints.
Nurtured by Jorge Alfredo Díaz Esteban Alfredo’s manuscripts.

A Trendy Ode:
Ode to Text on a Path, a trend so bold,
Where words curve and twist, stories unfold.
Typography on a whimsical ride,
Guided by paths, creativity's tide.
Written with Esteban, font of grace,
In literature's realm, its finds its place.
Within the pages of prose and verse,
Your presence elevates the words' traverse.
In texts, you dance, a rhythmic flow,
Breathing life into stories that glow.
From novels grand to poems so fine,
Esteban, your elegance, a divine sign.
Circular, spiral, or a meandering line,
Text on a path, a concept so fine.
Captivating eyes, leading the gaze,
A typographic journey that never betrays.
So let us celebrate this trend's delight,
Where words take flight, day or night.
On a winding path, it finds its way,
Adding flair and wonder, a visual display.

A Reflective Elegy:
Can you make some changes to some of the verses from elegy poem from before. It needs to
In sombre tones, we bid farewell,
To a zine, where Esteban’s tales did dwell.
A journey through its pages, now complete,
With wistful hearts, memories we greet.
Angelica Diaz Rivera, the font's creator,
Her artistic touch, a design curator.
Esteban, born from her skilled hand,
A testament to typography's grandstand.
Within the zine's realm, words found their way,
Curving along paths, in text's rhythmic ballet.
Text on a path, a trend so sublime,
Guiding our thoughts, in a visual rhyme.
As we reach the end, a sense of reflection,
The stories told, an introspection.
Esteban’s strokes, a poetic embrace,
Adding depth and grace, to each page's space.
Oh, how we learn from this zine’s capability,
Elevating Adobe creative suite ability.
Challenging our alignment principle,
Succeeding in making this zine invincible.
Though the journey ends, the memories remain,
Esteban’s presence, in our minds, sustain.
Reflections and gratitude, we now impart,
For the zine's beauty, forever in our heart.
