VALLISNERI HIGH SCHOOL_DESIGN W/ EVOLUTIONARY ALGORITM

Putting the student at the center of the design idea, with all his needs and comforts,  represented the starting point for the project for the new construction of part of
the Vallisneri scientific high school complex in Lucca. The thesis aimed to develop a
project sensitive to new studies on the evolution of teaching and learning environments, attentive to the needs of users and innovative, especially for the technologies used
during the design phase. Particular attention was paid to the study and inclusion of nature which, together with the other design choices, ensures that the new pavilion can become an example of sustainable architecture, capable of stimulating and raising awareness
among students on these issues.
EVOLUTIONARY ALGORITM AND ARCHITECTURE
The research of the thesis focused on the combination of architecture and technology, specifically on the use of evolutionary algorithms for solving problems. These algorithms
exploit heuristic calculations to determine a range of solutions that optimize or minimize the starting problem, in a relatively short time. The main theme of the thesis was the study of facade solutions to ensure the greatest possible visual comfort inside the classrooms. This objective was pursued through the use of a shielding system consisting of fixed strips, whose sizing and orientation was obtained using the aforementioned algorithms. The analysis was carried out using the Galapagos library, contained within the Rhino
plug-in, Grasshopper.
