The National Collegiate Scouting Association (NCSA) wanted Brella to visualize three client-supplied scripts, in a way that appealed to teenage students and their parents. They needed to be accessible by the average teen, and guide them through steps of the athletic scouting process. While there would be a voice over, it had to be comprehensible enough without it. Aesthetically, we wanted to make it fun and youthful.
We sought to make each frame digestible on the scale of a mobile phone screen. To help, I did initial concepting using sticky notes to get the scale of the illustrations and titles right. With a few packs of stickies, a wall, pencils and sharpies, I could reorder/create sequences and get quick feedback from the design/video/motion graphics team. The final product is motion graphics, but we filmed and composited a physical hand, using gestures that reference mobile devices.
