Whaleness · scientific research software design

Whaleness is a scientific research software developed by the CNRS (France) to conduct real-time monitoring and surveillance of whales (such as humpback whales, sperm whales, beluga whales, etc.). Their objective is to identify individuals that may be in distress and study the changes in their movements, particularly in relation to the threats posed by climate disruptions.

With the deployment of internet worldwide and the possibility to access it by satellite, we have chosen to develop a Software as a Service (SaaS) solution that enables scientists in the field to quickly update the database: adding specimens, uploading photos, providing information about events, taking measurements, and more.
This solution was notably built on Firebase, and allowed:

— Drastically reducing production costs, making it ideal for a limited budget.
— Simplifying the infrastructure of the information system, providing a flexible software solution.
— Significantly improving the performance of the software through fast data streams and instant synchronization, fulfilling the need for real-time synchronicity between fields and laboratories.

Scientific research softwares are often poorly ergonomic and difficult to use. I believed that one of the primary objectives to ensure the success of this product would be to offer the most comfortable and efficient user experience possible. Therefore, I drew inspiration from well-known and widely used modern complex interfaces, particularly Google Maps. I developed a comprehensive design system and built the application based on a 'Material' approach with a layered structure. As a result, we created modular interfaces that allow each researcher to customize the software according to his/her specific needs and expertise.
