Locality Life : A website for indigenous produce

Locality life
As a Multimedia Designer, my interest falls under the topic of sustainable collateral design. It is proven by scientists around the world that Eco-friendly design solutions are in desperate need in our society and many believe it is a field that will aid in the increase of the South African economy.
The problem:

Potatoes, Spinach and Apricots are familiar because these are the most common and frequent fresh produce found around the world. Most are grown locally in abundance but originally originated overseas. We eat a majority of alien plants that are not built for the soil, diseases and weather. They require more resources in order to protect them, causing farmers to use pesticides and over-fertilize the soil which causes nutrients to degrade and over the years become unusable. According to GrainsSA.com 'When soil degrades, the processes that take place within it are damaged. This causes a decline in soil health, biodiversity and productivity, leading to issues at all levels of many ecosystems, and resulting in large environmental consequences such as floods and mass migration.' On top of that it reduces the amount of carbon, the soil can store by 50-75%. The global climate risk index states that Africa is the most affected by climate change and the least contributor to climate change. “The floods destroyed more than 12,000 houses and forced an estimated 40,000 people from their homes.” - www.carbonbrief.org. Farmland that becomes decertified means nothing will be able to grow there. It will start to create large deserts next to our cities. The average soil loss rate under annual cropland specifically (grain crops) in South Africa is 13 tons per year, higher than the natural soil formation rate which is 5 tons per year. This means we are losing beneficial soil faster than we are naturally gaining it. More than 60% of the country is currently under commercial and subsistence farming, while around 10% is under cultivation. Pesticides also kill beneficial insects for example Ladybugs are natural pest control as their diet consists of eating plant pests.
