Gandhigram Khadi Trust - Redesigning Muslin Sarees

There is a continuous production of muslin sarees. Previously the saris were mainly plain / solid. A general customer feedback is that since Khadi is expensive, they prefer some design in the body. Solid colours is generally considered to be for office goers or for elderly women.

Along with the new production cycle, I was able to better plan the colours and designs keeping in mind each weaver’s interest and capability.

Gandhigram is known for it’s tie-dye border & Pallu which are typically the same colour. I played with the format and made the border a different colour than the Pallu. It makes for an interesting colour-blocked look.

These were the colours and the kind of tie-dye patterns that the weavers used to do. The body is one colour and the border and pallu are another darker colour.
I designed sarees where the pallu and the border were different colours and also introduced lighter and more playful variations.
We also experimented with a checks by inserting some plain weft yarns between the tie-dyed ones to give a more dramatic look.
