Re-Framing Pilgrimage

“Re-framingPilgrimage” is an expressive framework, a mixed-media construction that involves various materials including images, lights and sounds. The idea of the work was based on the development of one of the abstract concepts of the act of walking and reproduced in an artistic form.

Walk and follow a path ofideas, moved by inspirations that may be considered a highly symbolic action. Many authors and photographers already used the symbolism of the art of walking as an object for their projects, such as Richard Long, Hamish Fulton, Rebecca Solnit and served as reference for the artwork in question.

All photos of Re-framingPilgrimage, were produced over long hiking routes taken by photographer LucaPonzetti between Britain, France and Italy. The route chosen was the medieval pilgrimage route, known as the Via Francigena, which like Santiago de Compostela and Rome-Jerusalem was part of the network of pilgrimage to Rome.

The Via Francigena originally was created in order to connect pilgrims from England to Rome, taking as its starting point the city Cantenbury, located in the south of England.Thereafter, the route is divided into several sections and across different landscapes of France and Italy.

The sections chosen to performre-framing Pilgrimage were distances between Canterbury to Dover (England),from Calais to Reims (France), from Santhia` to Aosta and Pontremoli to Berceto(both in Italy). Although it represents a personal experience, the intention of the installation is to encourage an interactive activity.

Often the modern everyday life does not allow us to look where we walk. We trace the path and goal, but we lose the aura of appreciation of what is around the path. By turning the gallery into a hybrid space of nature and culture, I hope provoke an engagement between man and nature, and by presenting only part (frame) of each landscape found along the paths, I propose a critique of this day-to-days of contemporaneity.

Three-dimensional art of anykind is a physical fact and its three-dimensionality is its most obvious and expressive content, whereas the colour, surface, texture, and shape only emphasize the physical aspects of the work. Printed on a silver surface, my pictures are an emotional response to a landscape embeddedin a more analytical appreciation of its qualities. The images depict the calm that we can reach during, and sometimes only after the walks, when we feel at one with the surrounding environment. The colour silver, in fact, symbolizes calm.

Accordingly, I intend to show that this art can help us transform the action of walking into an aesthetic practice, giving importance not only for the action of walking from point A to B, but also consider what's in between, the beauty that exists along the path and the emotions felt by the pilgrim.
