Gloucester Dock was built in the early 19th century, and is accessed via the Sharpness Canal which by-passes the meanders and mud-flats of the River Severn. The dock prospered for well over a hundred years, allowing goods to be brought well inland by sea-going vessels instead of trans-shipping at Bristol. When business diminished later in the 20th century, the area was redeveloped for leisure, with some of the warehouses being converted for residential use and others to accomodate various business activities.
