The aim of this brief was to create a typographical work centered around a series of Ted Talks on a topic of our own choosing.
Having initially majored in Linguistics and maintaining a keen interest in that topic to this day I naturally chose the topic of language. The approach I took was to solely let the typography represent the topic of each talk. In the talk regarding the origins of the “c-word” I purposefully broke a number of rules such as breaking the grid, running text off the side of the page and across the centrefold to reflect the somewhat provocative nature of
this talk.
Reflecting the educational nature of Ted Talks I aimed for the aesthetic of the publication to evoke an old textbook: yellowed pages, “tables” and “diagrams”. The cover also aims to invoke a chalkboard with the title rendered in the International Phonetic Alphabet to reflect the linguistic nature of the talks.
