The original illustration that won the pitch for our team!
I was fortunate to get the opportunity to direct a series of four 15 second animated spots for the Colorado Lottery with the good folks at Roger. The agency was looking for a style inspired by the classic Let's All Go to the Lobby animation that played in cinemas before the trailers, featuring lotto tickets as the characters and each with a unique theme. They asked for an example of what the Pirate theme might look like so I made the illustration above.
After we won the pitch, the next step was to design characters and scenes for each theme based on the client's notes. One of their main requests was for a more washed out, vintage look. Below are the characters I designed with backgrounds painted by Wendy Park based on color sketches I made.
As soon as the character designs were approved, we started animating their walk cycles in Adobe Animate. I did rough animations and provided art direction for an amazing team of four other cel animators who cleaned them up in Animate. Them they were comped onto the backgrounds with After Effects. Below are the finished spots. Thanks to Terry Lee at Roger for the opportunity to lead one of my favorite projects!
