Children's Toys and Furniture Project

This project involved designing a toy or a children's piece of furniture with as few fixings as possible.  This was a brief set by the Edinburgh College of Art.   I decided to go foward with children's furniture and decided with whichever piece that I designed, I wanted to help form a greater ecological awareness amongst children.  The aim was to make this seating and storage unit entirely out of books from landfill, charity shops and remainder agents.  The book spines in this design act as natural hinges; book binding materials were used; faces of the unit were made out of book pages and the lock at the top of the design was made out of 'book wood'. The product introduces the idea that if the product tells a story or creates a narrative in a truthful or obvious way, then perhaps we can connect with it and have a greater awareness of the environment and the issue of sustainability.
