In conjunction with the 2023 Chinese New Year, my team and I set out to create a concept that collaborated between two cultures.

The concept for this shoot is based on Ariel from The Little Mermaid but we’ve given it an Oriental twist.

In conjunction with the Lunar New Year, there’s a common Chinese greeting that goes by ’年年有余‘ (nian nian you yu) with the ‘余’ sounding like ‘鱼’ (fish) which means: May you have abundance in life year after year; in Mandarin.

For the overall look I wanted the model to have bright red hair just as it was portrayed in the 1989 movie. Her green tail is replaced with traditional Chinese garment called 旗袍 (Qi Pao).
The flower crown on her head is inspired by the work of @lesliezhang1992 with Wallpaper Magazine.

In terms of photography I’ve drawn inspiration from @annieleibovitz , I’ve been greatly inspired by the work she and her lighting team does and tried my best to recreate it.

Here is; The Mermaid.
