This piece attempts to push the capabilities of certain materials. To both mimic and produces landscape conditions. It emulates a landscape by making the foam a site of exploration. Testing the Foams properties allows me to design a new field condition, a field condition that begins to emulate a landscape.
The tectonic strategies in this piece are Striate, Step, Grid, and perforate. The striates are visible in the form of scratches in the X shapes. Step is the changes in elevation throughout the piece. The theme of primary vs. secondary using the large X-shaped perforations, and the small circular ones create a sense of primary and secondary structure. The theme connections, Seams and Joints, are made using a grid. The grid uses two-inch cuts in one direction and one-inch cuts in the other direction that go halfway through the piece.
