Project 1
WORKOUT CALCULATOR

INSTRUCTION

For this project, we need to design an app of five or more screens that calculates numbers in some way.
On the stage of brainstorming  we should create a list of 50–80 possible calculator ideas;  and mind maps. Then narrow it down to 5–10 finalists based on concept strength and feasibility.
Choose a final subject direction for our calculator app.
Choose whether you’ll design for iOS (iPhone) or Android.  Design only for portrait (vertical) orientation.
research of your target audience. If versions of your calculator app already exist, why is yours better?
Create scenarios and test your concept.
Create three scenarios for usability testing your app.
Sketch 3–5 ideas for each important screen in your app.
Conduct usability test 1 using your sketches as paper prototypes.
1. Brainstorming

isn't an easy part of this work but we can't just skip it. First of all, I'm thinking about the app for Android, because didn't have much experience with iphone.
Finally I came up with the idea of a workout calculator.
It calculates the amount and identifies the type of physical training one should do today (at the moment of time)  according to the supposed level of activity for the day, body parameters (blood pressure, pulse, overall health) and environmental indexes like atm press, weather, humidity. So my target group is quite wide and includes everyone who is interested in sport, fitness, workout stuff.

2. Scenarios and usability testing
Scenario 1
you use the app to check out your general health and get recommendations. This app is able to detect your pulse by touching your wrist for 5 seconds. You will learn what your pulse, blood pressure, level of stress, and pulse quality are and get the recommendation for the workout activity level for today.

The app saves the messurement and can show the dynamics in a chart on the top of wrist page.

PERSON "1 ANATOLII

My friend Anatolii lives in Sydney, so he tested my scenarios online. Anatolii is a sportsman, he likes workouts.
"Imagine, that you woke up in the morning in a some kind of muddy state of health. You are thinking whether you should go jogging today or not."
Here is my idea of how to messure and make it clear.
The test was successful; Anatolii could follow the the app and messure his pulse and get the result.
But he didn't unerstand the scale of activity recommendation; and we found out together that the scale should be changed.
I fixed the scale, and this is improved version of the concept
Scenario 2
you use the app to set your workout goal and choose your activity plan. You choose the workout goal, the period of time for to reach the goal. Taking in account your health parameters the app calculates your workout plan

Imagine that you want to start working out to put on muscles. According to your overall health the app will recommend you a save period to reach the goal and make a workout plan. You can change it manually.
Anatolii has tested my second scenario and found it clear and  easy to use. It was unclear that that it was possible to change the period of workout manually.
Scenario 3
You use the app to see your workout results in the form of chart and your everage health parameters.
Imagine that you have been following the app's workout plan for 14 days with different health and weather dynamics. You want to see the progress.
ANATOLII tested the third scenario and had no problems with desplayed data perception.
Here are improved scenarios after the feedback and discussion with the instructor
Scenario 1
You woke up in the morning in a some kind of muddy state of health. Use the app to check your overall health today
Scenario 2
You decided to increase your muscle mass. Use the app to set that as your month's workout goal
Scenario 3
You 've completed 4 goals. Use the app to see your progress. This scenaro was the most difficalt to find the concept for.
After descussion with instructor it looks like this
Prototypes
Scenario 1
On the first step of this part of work I've used a lot of bright colors just for fun and inspiration. When you are doing your first prototype it's very encouraging. I didn't work with the end in mind and didn't understand how it should be look like.
So I've chosen pink for the first scenario like a color of the wrist, which I was going to use. I thought that prototype should have been very simple without any pictures, just strict geometry of boxes and concept blocks. I tried drawing tools and found out that Illustrator is better!
I've got feedback that pink color is too natural for Scenario one and recommendation was to try working in black and white color palette. Also the type should be the same in all app. So later I've changed Egyptian to Avenir.

USABILITY TESTING SECOND ROUND
User 2 Michael
A man in his sixties. He didn't want to be pictured . The testing was very productive.
After reading the first scenario he was a little bit confused which button he should use for the health test, and finaly he chose goal button and followed to the second scenario. I've realized that the buttons in the top of the main screen didn't follow the pattern of scenarios.

Michael's goal was to improve his heart,  to decrease cholesterol  and look slim in 4 weeks.  There was no button to go back to the main screen. He liked the icons for three scenarios.

conclusion
It was my first experience in UX design with very nice educational effect. It wasn't easy to move forward without a clear vision of the final product. It still has a lot of flaws and defects. There are still a lot of ideas for the functions and abilities of this app. It could be nice to think of the weather button. But I stop here
