Geoscan / Drone multispectral camera

Geoscan Pollux
Drone Multispectral Camera
Geoscan Pollux – is a first russian digital multispectral camera for drones. Mounted on a special drone and paired with a specific software, it is a comprehensive tool for assessing the condition of agricultural land.

Geoscan team asked us to develop an attractive and functional product design, that fits perfectly with the Geoscan Gemini drone and also works well in combination with other drones.

Process
Research
Research current market of multispectral cameras worldwide, analysing what they have in common, their flaws and strong points.
Explore the Geoscan brand and aesthetics. Analyse the Gemini drone designed by SmirnovDesign, with which the camera is going to be mailny used by Geoscan.
Research and get inspired by professional lenses, leading and innovative photography brands. Focus on aligning with a world of premium and innovative photography.
Decide to use a combination of sharp edges and soft surfaces, going for an image of a professional and serious device, yet with a welcoming shape. Our goal is to create a device with a design that transmits a feeling of "innovation", looks comfortable and user-friendly.
Concept Design
Complexity of this project is that both internal and external dimensional limitations are very strict. We have to fit all the electronics inside the camera, while it has to fit inside an already produced product. This becomes challenging as the overall design has to be attractive and competitive.
Instead of refined sketches. we deliver first concepts with conceptual, yet precise 3d models and renders, this way Geoscan team can simultaneusly review the feasibility, aesthetics and handling. To emphasize the shape and ease the review for client all concepts are presented in the same colour scheme.
After the review and analysis Geoscan team chooses an optimal design direction with several inspirations from other concepts and importants insights from collective brainstorms. With accumulated insights and feedback, we proceed.
Design Development
We improve and refine the design based on our and Geoscan’s team observations and collaborate on mutual adaptations between the design and electronics, till they are perfect fit.
Geoscan engineers conduct engineering development, using our parametric CAD models as starting and reference files.
We follow it by reelaborating needed details and giving visual an numeric recommendations in order to keep the desired level
of design quality as engineering proceeds.
Prototyping & Testing
Geoscan team produces prototypes, we go through several stages of revisions combined with design refinements till we finalise the shape and all the details.
CMF Design & Graphics
After the shape, ergonomics and physical details of the camera are defined, we switch to the graphics and CMF design,
defining multiple elements that lie on surface of the product: signs and icons on buttons and ports; colours, positions and size
of the graphical elements and, of course, colors and finishes of the product itself.

We document the project outputs are put in an informative and appealing presentation, that is used by the client as a reference document in communications with the manufacturer.
Functional Prototype
Geoscan team prints and tests the prototype on the drone. Everyone is happy with the result.

Testimonial
" We set Rodion the task of developing a design for a multispectral camera, we had very strict restrictions on the dimensions of the device. Thanks to Rodion, the camera has acquired its own unique look, the main advantages of which, in my opinion, are the combination of manufacturability and elegance, as well as the fact that our camera is not similar to any of the competitor's products.
Originality, lack of borrowing - this is true for the entire product as a whole, and the design developed by Rodion fully reflects this."
