Don't Hug Me I'm Scared Replicas
I absolutely loved the DHMIS TV series, both new and original, and adored the way everything in the show had a really handmade feel to it. After my sister also said the same, I knew I had to turn my hand to making some of the incredible props.
First I wanted to make something for me, because I loved it and as a way to test some of the techniques (I'm a novice at embroidery and have never worked with felt before). This resulted in the below; a remake of Red Guys card from episode one.
I tried to stay as true to the inital design as possible given my limited capabilties, and I'm really pleased with the result! Of course there are a few bits I would change - I'd do the black stitching neater and use less glue to stop the felt from matting - but for a first attempt I was very happy.
Then I started on the gifts for my sister. First her favourite prop from the series, Warren the Worm's (sorry, eagle's!) business card from episode 4. This one went much better as I had learned from my first attempt, and though it was much more fiddly to make I think it turned out brilliantly!
Finally, and the pièce de résistance, was the plate from the shows opening. I wanted to make something that was in every episode, something from around the house, and when I saw this it was perfect. Not too complicated, but with enough detail it would be fun to make and display. Plus with the stand it was more versatile, as I also put loops on the back so it could be hung or stood on display.
Though there are small parts I would change about the final design (like neatening up the stitching or edges) I am overall soooo happy with how it came out, and my sister loved it too! I really enjoyed making these and would love to do more, but they took a long time for me to produce and so I can't really justify it unless it's for a gift or something.
