Online Catalogue Front-End Redesign

Unhappy with the standard front-end SirsiDynix provided with their e-Library online catalogue, the Bibliothèque de Lachute asked me to completely redesign the interface to harmonize it with the city's website as well as simplify navigation and add missing functions.

The problem
The standard e-Library interface seems to come from another age of the Internet. There are several obvious problems:
- The font size is too small
- The are two navigation menu on top of one another: the main navigation menu, and the contextual menu, on a green background. Additionally, the contextual menu appears at the bottom of the page as well, for no apparent reason.
- When the user is logged in, the Login button disappears, but nothing says that the user is logged in
- Access to online resources is hard to find and the presentation of online resources is text-only, with no description of the resource.
- The book details page's information is presented haphazardly and the availability information is unclear
- The user account page is cluttered and information is misaligned.
Solution 1
I redesigned the look-and-feel of the catalogue to match that of the city's website. I made menu links into buttons with large type, and I moved the contextual menu to the left of the page, where users usually expect it. I also added a mention "Logged in as..." in the upper-right corner when the user is logged in.
Solution 2
I rearranged the book details page to present information in tables for more user-friendly reading. I added book covers for a more appealing look. I also added colour-coding for availability status: available copies are show in green, while unavailable copies are in red (this also applies to the search results page), a function that is very much appreciated by library personel and patrons alike.
Solution 3
To help promote online resources, I designed a completely new page with appealing buttons for each of the online resources. A popover description appears when the patron hovers over each button, describing the appeal of the resource.
To further increase online resource use, I implanted a new authentication method based on EZproxy. I designed the login page so that patrons would have no trouble finding the required information, namely their library card number and their PIN.

Before, patrons did not know where the number was on their library card. I fixed that problem by adding a picture of the library card and circling the card number, pointing to the field where they needed to enter it. To make things even simpler, I added a simple script that removed any spaces or dashes in the number they entered, which previously was the source of many login errors.
Solution 4

Finally, I reorganized the user account page to make the important information easier to identify. I separated the sections into clear tabs, and programmed from scratch a Loan History tab, which is not included by default with e-Library, but which was often requested by patrons and library staff.
