In my Collage for Illustration class, one of the assignments was to create a collage that had to do with a destination. I could do any kind of place, as small as a bedroom or as big as an entire country! I also had the choice of creating an imaginary destination. I decided to go with the latter option & I came up with the city called Metropoli di Sole, which means "Sun Metropolis" in Italian. The buildings are based off of architecture I saw when I was in Italy a few summers ago.
The back story of this piece is a boy escaping from a clock tower after he stole something from inside it. While the police force is trying to apprehend him, he already escaped on a stone wall before they could catch him.
I wanted to do a cut paper collage style to incoporate different shades of yellow into this sun town, while also conveying depth with foamcore board. It was a tedious process to arrange the character together and overlay the houses in the mountains, but it was overall a satisfying experience and I'm pleased with the results!
Afterwards, I took my collage outside to photograph the shadows in natural lighting. I ended up going with the first photo on the top row.
All other changes to the photograph were made in Photoshop.
