BOOK OF OBJECTS
The Project
Design a book that features five objects you treasure and are important to you. Whether that be your own five objects as source material or interviewing a friend or family member about their five objects.
My Approach
I began photographing my items with a Canon camera and writing prompts for each of them. To figure out my layouts for each spread, I experimented with different edits in photoshop using black and white filters, duotone, color threshold, removing of background, and image trace in Adobe Illustrator. Next, I created 7 different layout iterations for one of my objects to test the waters for what I could do for each spread. This allowed me to think broadly about how I could edit each photo and layout for that specific object to set the mood for each spread. For the front and back cover, I was inspired by my journal because that is what I wrote my prompts in. So, I stuck with the theme of a journal layout for a few pages in my book.
Iterations
These are just a few layouts that I generated to spark inspiration for my other spreads. As you can see, each spread has its own color theme and an element of balance for each page. The amount of images on one page balances out the heavy writing on the other.
The Final Book
This is the front cover and first couple pages of my book. As mentioned earlier, I wanted to stick with a journal theme aesthetic. This idea keeps it simple and personalized.
These are my final spreads for each object. I stuck with the same font throughout the whole book to keep some consistency, as well as, keeping the title the same format for each spread. Each item has a different theme and spread layout because each of my items have a different aesthetic. I wanted to characterize each spread according to the item I photographed, edited, and wrote about. Additionally, I wanted to challenge myself with designing layouts and incorporating imagery.
My final pages including the colophon consist of the same journal aesthetic. The last page of the book was inspired by my real journal in which the inside front cover consists of these words. I wanted to end off the book with this because it follows the overarching theme that these items are mine, hence, referring to the title of the book, What is Her's.
Lastly, I decided to saddle stitch my book with pink thread because I wanted the full experience of crafting a book.
