After speaking to Wade and Lisa McMullen I gathered a couple bullet points kept in mind, 1) They had yet to decorate their home, but the few things that stood out to them the most were their Turkish pillows and such gathered on their trip there. 2) They liked the idea of repurposing and found materials because Wade himself made some of the furnisher in their home with locally found materials. and 3) They might not be art connoiseurs  but they both loved the work of El Anatsui, the amazing artist that creates wall hanging out of plastic and other found materials. 

With these three simple staples in mind I came up with the idea to create a rug of my own, with found materials that emmulated both El Anatsui's work and traditional Turkish rug patterning. 

I spent a lot of time looking at how El Anatsui combined his materials to create drape and color changes. He emmulated fabric out of plastics and metals.

I spent a considerable amount of time looking at Turkish and Turkmenistan rugs created during the Ottoman Empire. The patterning was filled with geometric touching realistic florals that were formed around roundels and symmetrical compositions. 

 

After a lot of exprimentation and playing around with different patterning systems and such I created a two layerd piece, the base being of gold colored gift wrap that I wove through khaki colored netting, and the top laer being navy blue netting which I then screen printed my design on top of with a lot of extender.

The two layers together create an optical delsight of shimmering movement and colored areas, while the pigment of the paint cause the top layer of net to drape in certain areas and stay stiff on others.
