Brief.
Lincoln University currently has a diverse community of students and staff from varying cultures and religions. A temporary building has been allocated for quiet time, reflection and prayer.
You are required to design a quiet space with in the shell of the portacabins on the University Campus. This is a live project and throughout the project, you will be discussing ideas and presenting your work to clients. There will also be a prize for the most promising design!
After looking at the brief, researching religion and visiting different religious spaces I decided to use nature and community as inspiration for my design. This is because many if the different religions believe that it is our job to take care of the earth and also find peace in nature. They have strong family values and treat everyone in their community as an extended family. From this I knew I wanted to create a large, free, peaceful space therefore a lot of people will be able to use it for their own different needs.
Using a tree as main design focus, I created 6 levitating trunks which then branched out across the ceiling to then connect to each other, representing the union of different religions. Also by doing this I was able to keep the floor free so it can be used for many activities. Between each branch is fabric which light then shines through to create a peaceful, sacred feel.
