New "Scream Queen" In Town by Lesley Rodriguez

This project was made during Halloween, this prompted me to choose an article written by a friend of mine that centers around women and horror. The title is a reference to the horror show, Scream Queens which has become a well known show. I knew this cover had to represent the same boldness that those shows and these women in horror exhibit.

I chose this powerful image to be the centerpiece, but initially the colors made it look quite boring. On Pinterest I saw a lot of monochromatic magazines where they used bright colors, almost resembling highlighters. I decided a brighter monochromatic pink would look best for this layout. This allowed for a pop of color but also helped to keep this layout looking feminine and modern. There are a lot of different aesthetics that could have been used to match the title, but I did not want the reader to feel like it was a scary or daunting article. This image demands attention and matches well with the story but the colors make it more lighthearted. Additionally, the hands symbolize the characters in the horror narratives that try to keep those scream queens from screaming.

The “Queen” part could not be ignored so I found paper crowns and initially, I only put them on one side but I decided it looked too asymmetrical and decided to put them over the entire layout. I kept the text black at first, but making everything pink looked much better and, again it made it pop more.

Although I would usually do multiple columns in a layout, the combination of a big portrait and a short article called for one column on each page. I think it would have been harder to read or oddly shaped with the text wrap if I had done it any differently. Overall, the elements blend together well and it is very easy to read.
