The Flaming Love - Paper Oblation Art Center

The Flaming Love - Paper Oblation Art Center

Architectural Studio 4 (2021)
Project typology: Reviving Malaysia Dying Art and Trade Center
Project Site: Lot 37, Persiaran King Edward, Georgetown, 10300 Penang
Project Size: 800 sqm
Duration: 4 weeks
Design Brief and Concept:
In this project, Paper oblation is chosen as the central theme to showcase and appreciate the dying art in Georgetown. Paper Oblation is always related to horror and creepy feeling to people, and it acts as a hot theme for a horror movie. However, this culture was created for the Chinese to connect with their ancestor who had passed away. They often burn these 'assets' to their family member who lives in the 'third place'. Thus, this building is built to present and emerge the warm side of paper oblation to the public, attract the youngster to involve themselves in this dying art, and turn paper oblation into art instead of only being burnt during the festival.
The Perspective view of Paper Oblation Art Center
Design strategy:
The building is designed with some shown structures which act as a symbol of burning paper oblation. But, then, the exhibition parts are more focused on feelings, including a hot sense when visitors step near paper oblation products and bamboo sticks beating each other to produce a sound similar to burning paper oblation products. The exhibition is also more interactive, such as introducing the Hologram exhibition, VR Room experience activity, letter corner, AR interaction corner, and workshop.
