Taking the Sundance Film Festival, I was tasked with designing boards for a trailer that would encapsulate the mood & essence of the festival. Embracing the natural beauty of Salt Lake's surrounding mountian ranges, the trailer follows the story of an anonymous explorer venturing through a cavern littered with thousands of competing gemstones. The stones, each giving off their own small light, illuminate the otherwise dark interior. Finally, our intrepid explorer stumbles across his or her diamond in the rough, thus arriving at the enlightened destination of the journey.
 

For this story, I wanted the theme to be one of exploration & discovery. The film festival, with its hundreds of wonderful movies, can be a strange and intimidating place to stumble through. Yet, each film has its own particualr spark, and when united with its fellow features, creates a beautiful, strange, oft unfamiliar landscape of cinema to travel through. However, there will always be (at least) one film to set off the spark in each festival-goer, one that opens their eyes and creates resonance with them. This is the diamond in the rough that brings people back to film festivals over, and over again. And it is just this type of discovery that may be found at Sundance.
