Spatial Dissemblance

The 4 compositions you see here were projected onto Samitaur Tower in Culver City, CA. This 72ft tower features 4 giant curved, skewed, and extruded screens that was built with the sole intention of presenting beautiful imagery to the estimated 30,000 people that pass by it everyday. Strictly designed for art's sake, the only restriction I had was to refrain from making any commercial work. This is what you call a gold mine: total creative freedom, 4 enormous screens, 30,000 viewers per day.
Samitaur Tower
This project brief was given to all 20 students in SCAD's Reality Based Motion-Media class, taught by our chair of Motion Media Design, John Colette. In the end, we compiled a 20 minute looping video and were the first group of designers to provide content specifically for Samitaur Tower.

"Spacial Dissemblance" was the joint effort of Myles Bryan and myself. As we conceptualized we kept in mind that most of our audience would be passing by rapidly in cars or train. This short window of opportunity pushed us away from a narrative and took us in an abstract and conceptual direction. Our piece shows three themes - a parking lot, a train yard, and docks - that reference the high traffic and transportation of L.A. Each scene then had an element that also reflected the surrounding environment in a not so familiar way. This juxtaposition of familiarity and unfamiliarity was aimed at creating a lasting moment in our passing viewers that would resonate in them a moment of confusion and wonder.

We were really looking for our piece to be hard to interpret, and therefore allow everyone to create their own understanding of the elements they saw. We were very satisfied with the outcome! Myles was even lucky to fly out to LA with our professor and a few other students and see it come to life. This project was an insane amount of fun and I am very fortunate to have had this opportunity to experiment and create beautiful things in the name of art!
