For this project, I was required to create something in the form of a digital collage. I chose to do one of my favorite young adult novels, I Can't Tell You by Hillary Frank. The book revolves around a boy in college who decides, after a huge fight with his best friend, to only communicate through notes in order to avoid speaking & saying the wrong thing. I thought that the element of paper, tying in with his note writing, would be an awesome theme to explore with this digital collage assignment & I'm pleased with how it turned out!
The original pen drawing had the main characters, Jake & Alexandra (nicknamed "Xandra" in the book), barely touching, but I thought having them intersect almost like pen doodles with each other would be a more interesting approach.
Below are samples from Frank's book, which features a number of doodles that the character Jake doodled on the side of his notes to his friends. In order to tie the cover in with the rest of the book, I recreated a few of his doodles.
Throughout the book, Jake has an attraction to Xandra. In between conversations with his friends, there are a number of times that he writes letters to her without ever sending them, which is incredibly important to the overall message of the book. I used one of his many letters to her as the background.
The typefaces used on this project are not my own.
The title was written by me, but based off of the font OCTOBER.
The typeface used for the letter to Xandra is Weaselbee Beans. The text itself is also original material written by Hillary Frank © 2004.
The typeface used for the author's name & the red slip of paper next to it is DK Crayon Crumble.
