Typography 1: Type Designer Inspired Booklet

I chose Zuzana Licko as my type designer. She designed Mrs. Eaves, a typeface I am quite fond of. I used this opportunity to research her & her other designs. I was quite intrigued by her typeface Puzzler. It is a highly irregular typeface, void of letterforms, numbers or grammatical glyphs. Rather, squares of halftones with many variants take their places. This allows for the already incredibly precise control inherent in typesetting to be applied to the spacing and sizing of these halftone keystrokes. I decided to have Ms. Licko’s talk consist of her experience in traditional type design and then shift towards designing what I consider to be nontype typography. Thus, the title of her talk, “type&nontype”.

I worked with two typefaces by Licko: Mrs. Eaves & Dogma. Mrs. Eaves has a good variety of forms which allowed for coherent lower levels of hierarchy. Mrs. Eaves & Dogma contrast greatly. I used halftone gradients as a consistent design element. The color scheme was inspired by a Mrs. Eaves showcase designed by Licko.
